Scene1. Overture

farmer and cow

[Darkness. Music. A sun slowly rises over the stage set that will serve as the basic backdrop, with gradual alterations, for most of the opera. In front of the sun is the image of a lion holding a sword. The background depicts mountains and desert. In the wings are scenes of fields being worked by peasants. In the foreground is a generic Iranian town, complete with a turreted mosque and a castle.

As the first light makes some of the stage set visible, the cry of muezzin is heard intoning a Persian accented Twelver Shi’ite Shahada: ashahadu la ila illa allah va mohammad rasol allah va ali vakil allah. A lone farmer, reminiscent of Hassan from Dairush Mehrjui’s movie “The Cow”, leads his cow from the town to the fields.]
