Scene11. “There’s something special in the air”
peasants and townspeople[Stage is set more or less as before. The city and other fixtures look somewhat trashed and neglected. The lion/sword image has been removed. No smoke comes from the factories or refineries. For the only time in the entire opera, the peasants and townspeople take center stage.]
- Chorus: There’s something special in the air
- I know that yesterday it wasn’t there
- It’s like a holiday that comes once in a lifetime
- The one you never thought you’d ever really find
- Young man: It seems like our whole lives we’ve soldiered on
- And only in our dreams we dared to long
- Young woman: I can’t believe we’d ever live to sing this song
- I can’t believe that he’s really gone
- Old man: It’s a feeling I’ve felt once before
- A thousand years ago or maybe more
- Old woman: Like something you can’t forget you’ve seen
- Even if it was only in a dream
- Chorus: There’s something special in the air
- I know that yesterday it wasn’t there
- It feels too crisp and clear to touch or see
- Can it really be that we are free?
