Scene21. “The spirit of Allah”
Ayatollah Khomeini alone[Stage is empty save Khomeini. Scenery is as before, but the town, the oil refineries, and the fields, all lie in ruins. The stylized “Allah” insignia has taken the former place of the sword/lion image in front of the sun.]
- ARK: I’ve tried for so long, but still infidels exist
- O God! You didn’t tell me it would be as hard as this
- I’ve been patient and for years disgusted
- But the people are ungrateful and can’t be trusted
- So easy to oppose when the shah was on the throne
- Maybe I should have stayed in Qom
- Time to teach, to judge, to write,
- With a new temporary wife each night
- The road is short, the end is bleak
- I’m the spirit of Allah, not some pencil-neck geek
- The path is straight, my aim is true
- I’m the spirit of Allah, who the hell are you.
- I was sad about excommunicating Shariatmadari
- And deporting Bani-Sadr and the rest of his party
- And I’m sorry for all the people whose lives couldn’t be saved
- But they weren’t reliable, or they were simply in the way
- It’s a shame our country is being savagely wrecked
- But it does help to keep my opponents in check
- In the end it doesn’t matter how many people must be killed
- Because it’s all for the glory of God’s divine will
- The road is short, etc.
- I know I don’t have much longer to live
- But that’s OK, cause I know I had so much to give
- I’ve left this country a legacy it won’t soon forget
- Destruction, unemployment, and foreign debt
- But besides tyranny, shattered dreams, and war
- I’ve given this nation something more
- After all this ravage, oppression, and doubt
- Do you think they’ll finally figure it out?
