World Net Daily has a story on a man who was arrested after his four year old daughter drew a picture of him with a gun (emphasis mine):
…Sansone’s 4-year-old daughter had drawn a picture of a man holding a gun. When the teacher asked her who the man in the picture was, the girl replied that it was her daddy, and that he uses the gun to shoot bad guys and monsters.
The teacher alerted child protective services based on concern that the little girl and her siblings might be living in a home with an unsecured firearm in it. The folks at children’s services called the police because guns are a police matter, and the police went to the school and arrested the father when he came in.
When our daughter was four she asked me what I would do if a bad guy broke into our house. She wanted to know if I had any superhero moves like on the cartoons she watched. Sadly I don’t, but fortunately as the saying goes:

I explained to her that while I lack any of the powers of Superman, I’m prepared to protect her and the rest of the family in the unlikely event that any bad men decide to break into our home. I haven’t taken her to the range yet, but she has watched me clean my .45. She was satisfied with my ability to protect her and didn’t wonder any further about the question.
Fortunately in the World Net Daily story it was all a misunderstanding. The Canadian police determined that her father posed no credible threat to any bad guys or monsters who might want to harm her and let him go:
Everyone was eventually allowed to return home, and they were even allowed to keep the clear plastic suction dart pistol Daddy used for shooting bad guys and monsters…

Not the teacher, not the principal, not the school board, not the social services, not the Police, nor even the Premier of Ontario “they were following procedure”. Fortunately SunTV has been all over it. The CBC (Canada’s national broacasting corporation) ignored it for a while. They are effectively a shill for the Left (Ontario is Liberal which is left of centre).
Standard leftist responses have been muted along the lines of ‘guns are bad. There is no reason to own them (never mind that the man in question didn’t own a gun). The question was posed on SunTV (Michael Coren): “if the girl had drawn her mommy shooting monsters, would this even be a story”?

Canada is part of the commonwealth. You have no right to own a gun. Now… I’m not sure about the Canucks, but it is fairly easy to get a gun licence for hunting — game and varmints. A number of people will have a shotgun (for the birds) a .303 (for the deer) and a .22 for rabbits and general vermin. For a farmer, a gun is a tool — it keeps pests from his crop.
But there is a virulent dislike of handguns — you need specail permission for one of those and better have a good use for it (pistol shooting for a club is still OK). When you combine this with a very active and professionally defensive child welfare system (that defaults to removing children) and anti violence laws, you get this kind of stupidty.
I know that many readers here are from Texas. But the USA gun laws are fairly unique. In the commonwealth, walking around with any kind of knife beyond a mulitool will get you arrested, and the multitool could as well.
Finally, the case was in… Ontario . The land of the Liberal Party (leftist) and the NDP (stupidly leftist). The Canadians are — somewhat embarrassed about this.

US big cities tend to be the same way, as well as some states. Unless one is politically connected, a cop, or in one of a very few professional money handling professions, it’s next to impossible to get a concealed carry permit for a handgun in Maryland. I live in Baltimore City, which is even worse. Unlike many of the counties and most of the rest of the state, Tasers and pepper spray are illegal here.
That being said, it’s not quite like DC. It’s very possible to have a handgun or rifles of various types in your home, so home defense isn’t outlawed at least.
Just bought a Glock today. Unfortunately I live in California so I have to wait 10 days to take it home. Also it only comes with 10 shot clips instead of the standard 15 shot clips. Will have to fix that. I’ll be sure never to take it over the border to Canada during one of my road trips. I get the feeling they would not take kindly to armed Amerikkans.

You really have to wonder about the intelligence, or rather the gullibility of teachers – (and I am assuming it must have been a female teacher). A four year old says that her Daddy shoots, inter alia, monsters and the teacher thinks this is justification to call the police – and they, the police, take it seriously. And since when was self-defence (which is what shooting a bad guy would be), illegal.
I always used to puzzle about the Salem Witch Hunts, but given the shear amount of witch-huntery that goes on nowadays, I begin to grasp what it must have been like, when the first and initial reaction was to call for the WitchFinder General.

A man’s 2nd Amendment right to bear arms is NOT inalienable in the Family Court system with current US regulations. A women can get a Harassment Restraining Order (which are issued without any proof of danger) and then the regulations prohibit the man from purchasing ANY gun, whether a handgun, rifle or shotgun. This is a federal law in the US. So it is a prudent move for a man to go out and at least buy a home defense shotgun before any divorce/custody shenanigans. All she has to do is to claim to be afraid of him and he is fooked.
A 12ga pump Mossberg 500 will be under $300. The pump sound will send chills up the spine of any intruder and loaded with buckshot it will not penetrate walls, so it is fairly safe to use indoors (if needed). A Taurus Judge revolver fires .410 shotgun shells (or Colt .45 rounds). Therefore shells with multiple projectile can have a wide pattern and yet also not penetrate walls.

Cana-duh is the country that spent an incredible amount of money on a gun registration system that has so far failed to solve even a single murder. It’s been well over 10 years and even now the Cana-duhian gun registration system is still a sacred cow that cannot be questioned. Ontario, Cana-duh is the province that has been least friendly to firearms for a very long time. Add that to the hyperactive “child saver” mindset and this situation is unfortunately quite believable.
It’s a tiny bit of good news that anyone in Cana-duh would be embarrassed by this travesty.

@ 7man – agreed, the law is fracked. One work around I’ve heard concerning restraining orders and DV charges is blackpowder pistols. My understanding (I have not researched this fully) is that non-cartridge BP weapons (colt army, dragoon and such) are not legally classified as ‘firearms.’ They are still considered weapons as far as concealed carry and such but are not firearms. A person under a restraining order may be able to purchase one. Granted there is a whole other skill set involved and they are not exactly modern firepower – but it’s still better then a pointy stick. Back in the day, there we’re many people planted by those archaic weapons.
Also, I agree that the ole’ faithful pump 12g is a fine house gun. I disagree however about buck shot not penetrating walls. They absolutely will. A double-ought is roughly 9 32auto rounds. For sure they won’t penetrate as many walls as say a 30-30, but they will without a doubt penetrate several layers of sheet-rock. I don’t mean to get into a gun debate here, there are plenty of gun forums that I visit for that.
It is not in the governments best interest to have an armed population. For one, it would make it more difficult to justify the multi-billions we spent on law enforcement and ‘safety’ programs. Alot of people would lose their job if criminal threats were reduced. Additionally, the true alphas at the top, don’t want to see the proles with a means of keeping them in check.

The beauty of the Texas CHL concept is that it simplifies the enforcement of all other gun laws. And Texas has plenty of restrictions. It is Hollywood myth that the laws are permissive or even simple. They are in fact extensive with many gray areas. In practice, here is how it works.

Citizen – shows him DL and valid current CHL
Officer, “Have a nice day!”

Officer, “Do you have any weapons?” If the answer is yes you will be treated as someone who has a weapon and who would not qualify for a CHL. Not good. Or you could lie to the cop and have that crime added to every thing else when they search your stuff.
In other words, there is a lot of pressure to just go get the d..m license if you want to have guns in your life. In some ways it is like the Canada way except without the anti-gun hysteria.
A short barreled revolver in .44 special was the choice of a lot of the old Rangers. It takes years of experience to figure out all the reasons.

Practically, though, I think it makes some sense. If you’re going to get out of bed in the middle of the night to “check out that noise” for snookums, it makes sense to (a.) bring a gun (if it’s actually an intruder, whatcha gonna do without one?) and (b.) carry the guy as safely as possible (no round in the chamber). Particularly a pump-action, which is so quick to chamber.

Here in Canada you need a licence to own a rifle, and a specialized license to own a handgun. Fully automatics are banned, and magazines are restricted to 5 or 10 rounds, or something. While not at the range, your weapon must be locked up with a trigger guard, with the ammo stored separately. The Gun Registry is widely recognized as a joke by both sides, but there doesn’t seem to be the political will to kill it.
You cannot carry a firearm, unless if you’re on your farm.
There’s a growing ‘Red Tory’ conservatism in my country, but none of the parties seem to care. They continue to fund the human rights’ tribunals, and interventionist police state tactics. Canadians are getting sick of it. But our politicians don’t care.

Good point. I think the notion originated with the practice of stowing a shotgun “cruiser safe”, which IIRC means hammer down, safety off, magazine loaded, chamber empty. That way it’s only one big obvious movement to render the thing lethal, and as long as it is stored, the mainspring isn’t compressed (though the magazine spring is). The cops would grab their 12-gauges out of their cars, rack their slides, and any bystanders around would be suitably impressed.
So naturally Hollywood decided it is great practice to go into combat with your chamber empty. The same is true of pistols. Screenwriters really can’t think of realistic ways to increase tension in a scene. They start half the scenes they right by someone holding a gun on someone else, so then they start racking slides and cocking hammers when there is no reason to, because modern actors can’t be relied on to convey aggression or hostility with facial expression or tone of voice. (Rant over.)
What is with the photo? Beautiful gun, sensible flashlight, but I’m sensing there is a joke going on with the generic painkiller that I’m not getting. I.e., the gun will kill your headache (your intruder is a headache). Or, shooting this gun will give you a headache. Or being shot by it will give you a headache, so you can give the axe-murderer an acetominophen while he bleeds waiting for the cops. (I like the last interpretation most of all.)

Action movies are always worth a good chuckle. Endless round capacity. Main character will get in a firefight, and afterwords going mano-y-mano with the bad guy he’s got to pull the slide or cock the hammer, despite not having reloaded and presumably having a round chambered. Also, comical gun safety (or lack thereof). Police officers, detectives flailing guns around. My uncle (ret. Guard), who drilled every ounce of gun safety knowledge into my head would have a cow.
My wife was born and raised in Canada and had never touched a gun until she met me. Now she loves them. A few years ago for Valentines Day I gave her Crimson Trace laser grips for her 9mm and she gave me a Benelli 12 gauge. (I’m a native West Texan and we live outside Fort Worth).

In regards to the stupidity expressed on christianforums.com I’ve seen a lot of weird beliefs in church expressed over the years. I remember being in a men’s accountability group several years ago and we were discussing temptation. None of the guys wanted to admit they were tempted by women. I on the other hand admitted to having temptation (for which I was looked down upon). Several guys said that Satan was tempting them with morning wood (which is a normal, healthy physiological occurrence btw) and that they would lay in bed and pray until their erections subsided. I thought it was one of the dumbest things I’ve ever heard in my life, which is why I still remember it to this day.

The most recent film I’ve watched with realistic gun play was “The Veteran” a UK film showing life in a picturesque drug gang controlled inner-city estate and a veteran from the ‘Stan. I liked the whole film, others thought it dragged a bit until the last 15-20 minutes. Short controlled bursts, re-loading etc
What is this ‘permit’ you folks are talking about? A license to carry a concealed firearm? I’m in Arizona, we don’t need no steenking permit!
Open, concealed, no papers needed. The rights of the property owner are upheld, so there are some areas where you can’t carry (gov buildings, some malls, etc.), but I consider that a good thing. I’ll add that police officers are noticeably nicer than in areas of high gun control (on average), and citizens are more likely to assist them if they’re in trouble.
Tacomaster, that kind of ignorance is all too common among some groups. A man who doesn’t understand the physiology behind a morning erection is not a likely candidate for anything more complex, such as Game. However, there’s no justification for keeping men in that state of ignorance, unless it is perhaps to make them easier to control…
tweell, the Arizona law you refer to is rather recent, and took a fair amount of effort to put into the law. 20 years ago there wasn’t any legal way for anyone not a cop to carry concealed in Arizona, and some police chiefs took a dim view of legal open carry. The same was true in Texas, except that open carry wasn’t legal there. A lot of work by a lot of people has paid off, don’t take it for granted.

The gun registry in Canada is actually on its way out, thanks to the Conservative government. The bill to abolish it is has been passed in Parliament and is currently going through the Senate (a formality).
Just the long-gun registry. Handguns and prohobited projectile weapons (crossbows) are still under the registry.

A somewhat related gun story for you all. Years ago a gentleman met his daughter’s beau for the first time as before they went on their first date. As the young buck walked into the kitchen, our hero had pretty much his whole gun collection on the table and was carefully cleaning each unloaded firearm. Just before his daughter finished getting ready and came down the stairs, he had only one thing to say to the young man.
“Son, if you promise to keep your gun in your holster, I’ll keep mine in mine.”
Before they left, he told them both to be home at 11:00pm, he dropped her off at 10:30.
