First rate projection.

As most already know, Sabrina Rubin Erdely went looking for a story which would be a “rape culture” fantasy story, one activists like her dream about.  According to an early Washington Post article on the UVA rape piece*, Erdely searched for six weeks before she found her dream story.  But when she found it, it clearly was worth the wait.  It had everything a “rape culture” activist dreams of:  White privilege, an evil fraternity initiation, hours of gang rape on a floor of broken glass, friends and university administration who urged the victim to keep silent, and much more.  Based on more recent WaPo reporting and the apologies of the Rolling Stone editors, it appears that Erdely was so much in love with this fantasy story that she decided it was too good to check out.  Not only did Erdely not interview the accused, she didn’t even interview “Jackie’s” three friends, the only other people who could corroborate Jackie’s story.  It seems that Erdely understood how risky trying to verify a story this perfect would be.

It wasn’t just Erdely who fell in love with this perfect story.  Feminists across the media fell in love with the fantasy story as well.  But now the fantasy has been dashed, and Amanda Hess at Slate DoubleX is doing damage control.  Hess is pleading with her fellow feminists to let the UVA rape story fantasy go to avoid doing even more harm to the carefully crafted “rape culture” narrative.  This is important, Hess explains, because there are people out there nurturing the fantasy that feminists are inventing rape stories to advance their narrative (emphasis mine):

There are people on the fringe who believe that any rape story with any discrepancies is evidence of a vast feminist conspiracy aimed at inventing rapes and vilifying innocent men, but these rape truthers are not reasonable people, nor are they most people, and it is unwise to mold the conversation around their fantasies. I am, however, concerned with how some feminists and progressives have responded to the ever-expanding holes in Rolling Stone’s story.

In fairness to Erdely, she does not appear to have made up the fantastic story herself.  By all accounts, she merely shopped around for a month and a half until she could find the one woman willing to tell her the story she wanted to write, and then published Jackie’s tale without doing the most basic investigation into the veracity of the story.  However, Hess’ claim is a straw man;  I’m not aware of any popular bloggers claiming that Erdely took the final shortcut of directly making up the story in her zeal to advance the feminist narrative of “rape culture”.  Moreover, the widespread collusion by feminists to find, print, and propagate fantastic stories to advance the “rape culture” narrative is now beyond any serious contention.

The next step for Feminist journalists is to completely falsify and directly make up rape stories and simply claim the victims wish to remain anonymous. This would be a risky strategy because people would discover the facts don’t line up, so some Feminists are sending out a carefully-worded warning against this practice in order to protect their cause.

It is quite possible some kind of unwanted act happened, but that has gotten lost. The story has the same kind of surrealistic detail that the toddlers would tell of an accused satanic ritual abuse trial, e.g. “they would put sharks into the water and throw babies in and the sharks would eat them, then use a machine to catch the sharks”. If something happened, it also may be like a passage I remember from “To Kill a Mockingbird” where a stabbing the children just heard in the most general terms was played out and reenacted and gory details added. Being pushed down in a parking lot where there was the remains of something shattered is not the kind of thing you see on TV in a CSI or NCIS show.

There is also the element of expectation. There are many areas of Detroit I would not venture into even if armed on the middle of a sunny day where the weather was cold enough to keep sane people in. Somehow women going to fraternity drinking parties is a case of fools going where angels fear to tread.

The problem with the hookup culture is given the geography, Jackie was trying to find someone to hookup with. I doubt they have as many problems at Brigham Young U, or Wyoming Catholic College or Bob Jones U. The ladies there aren’t looking for a hookup. There is the contradiction where quite literally “the woman wants it”, just not from the particular man she is measuring the alpha-hood of. If you dress, act, and talk provocatively, people might get the impression that your virginity is long lost and you want to continue down that path. Or that in such accusations, the “No” is trying to be retroactive, especially when women are attracted to aggressive men.

A partial aside. While getting groceries at the superstore, I went past the book department, and on the endcaps were two romance novels involving cowboys. Now most cowboys aren’t rich or leaders, but are alphas. Same with bikers and other masculine icons. The college women aren’t spending time with Melvin Nerdly who wants to major in accounting and become a CPA. Nor are there romance novels with that theme. They are attracted to aggression, then assume they can turn it off if they think it is going too far. They could “turn it on” in a Melvin Nerdly, but they aren’t attracted in the first place. Such is “Game”. Jackie was going after some of the boys – what kind? (Remembering stories about a woman getting her face bitten off by a pit-bull she adopted).

I, myself also don’t trust the police so I can see a rape victim not wanting to report it just to have Detective Sceptico interrogate her like she was a suspect. It also happens to parents or relatives when there is a murder and the police want to convict someone. Perhaps police departments should have a special group to interview the victims trained to be caring and sensitive, but also to get the facts and sort the imaginings instead of just the dry and sometimes leading or skeptical and detached questioning.

And before you start disagreeing, consider if a wife was harming the children and the husband reported it. CPS would take the kids away, and probably shift blame (despite testimony, video, and other clear evidence) to the man, and eventually giving the children back to the wife. You don’t have to look far to find even worse cases.

For justice, one must start with the truth and reason. Being violated is ugly, and emotion is natural, but it is counterproductive. EMTs learn to NOT remove impaled objects to avoid killing the person from bleeding, though it seems to be the most natural thing. Emotion can lead to perjury and that is also supposed to be a serious crime. But if we don’t take it seriously, why take rape seriously?

  5. The fantasy is that a college woman has a 1 in 4 chance of being raped rather than 1 in a thousand. That’s a lot of imaginative invention.

  6. Artisanal Toad says:

“Hess is pleading with her fellow feminists to let the UVA rape story fantasy go to avoid doing even more harm to the carefully crafted “rape culture” narrative.”

Their primary goal is to control the narrative. Rotterham, like this case, is destined for the memory hole. Women do lie about being raped, but that isn’t part of their narrative so this has to be forgotten.

This does indeed happen. I actually know a man who used a webcam to catch his wife abusing their children. The police wouldn’t investigate due to his rather minor criminal record. He even mailed them a DVD. In their divorce she was given full custody.

True story. I don’t have much more detail but even that little bit I know is disturbing.

She will fail to become a man, but she may succeed in ceasing to be a woman.

Truth is not a priority of the Cathedral. They have an agenda to push and need emotionally loaded grievances with which to drive it. Why WOULD they check the facts? The entire Left is fueled by emotion, not reason, and there’s no God to hold them accountable, and the story-giver can always be blamed if there’s too much blowback. (Which is no doubt why Erdely shopped for a ‘victim’ instead of inventing one.)

The journalist knows big lies will sell papers. The politician knows campaign lies will get him reelected. The welfare deadbeats know they’re parasites but admitting it would end the free ride. This is why truth isn’t valued… because it displaces self-interest.

These days, any woman who claims a sex crime but refuses to involve police has no credibility. None. Especially if they’re pushing criminal justice “alternatives” like college tribunals instead. “The burden of proof is so unfair… can’t we just agree I was raaaped?”

Considering when feminists like Jessica Valenti tweet ‘I trust women’….many more women laugh at her than men.

Feminists wanted to be equal to men…well they are going to get plenty of lessons on woman’s nature.

  23. The only way to really shut down this whole feminist narrative “rape culture” thing is to ask a feminist (any feminist) who is trying to sell you on this “rape culture” as to how much those frat boys at UVa should sue Jackie, UVa, and Rolling Stone for in court? Watch the expression on her face as she stares at you for a moment with nothing to say. There is NO WAY feminists have really thought this through. They can’t think it through as if they actually spent any time to think about things, they wouldn’t be feminist!

  24. Isa says:

    @TFH
The reporting/ nonreporting has quite a bit to do with culture and the type of police department. Britain is well known for ignoring quite clear cut cases, so if reporting would lead to retaliation before prosecution… most people choose physical safety before justice. As my lawyer told me, restraining orders are great for murder cases, but that piece of paper isn’t very good body armor.

Conversely, in cases of incest there is such a huge amount of familial pressure and dependence, and if coupled with status as an immigrant or with poor mastery of the language in the country where the person now lives… no reporting.

That’s the best example of newspeak I’ve seen yet. It is ENTIRELY dismissive of the point of view of other people, while at the same time conciliatory to faults within. It’s elegant in it’s display of disturbing lines of thought among the person who wrote it. I’ve sat through sermons in cults, and that quote reads like anything you might hear a cult leader say.

The first time anyone tells you that you should ignore the perspective of someone else or some group is the last time you should listen to that person.

  30. Novaseeker says:

It must be said that it is a fairly energetic and creative attempt at damage control.

For all of her bias and misandry, Hess at least is not so far beyond the pale as to fail to recognize that the Jackie story is a hoax, at least as it was reported in RS. In other words, she’s reasonable enough to look at the WP’s reporting and connect the dots and see what that reveals.

However, I doubt her attempt at damage control will be effective, because if anything the entire response to the uncovering of the hoax — denial from pretty much *all* feminist activists apart from Hess — reflects the mindset of most of that movement, and it’s a mindset that won’t easily be changed — for “good” resaon, from the perspective of a radical feminist.

The reason is that to admit that false accusations of rape exist would undermine much of what the rape hysteria movement is trying to achieve. All of the various changes in rules, procedures, norms, burdens of proof and so on are predicated on the idea that FRAs simply do not happen (or are so rare as to be negligible), and that therefore the normal procedures for evidence and burdens of proof and so on should be set aside simply because rape accusations are always true, anyway. If you admit that there are FRAs, even to the point of very high profile ones like this story or the Dunham memoir, it undermines the entire mission of setting aside centuries of criminal law, procedure and defendant’s rights, because rape then appears to be more like other crimes — i.e., one that may or may not have happened, and which the state must prove to have happened beyond a reasonable doubt in order to convict. If rape accusations are always true, feminists argue, this kind of procedure is unnecessary, and because it is traumatic for the accuser (who is always telling the truth), it should be streamlined and replaced with a system that places the burden on the defendant, because, they say, unlike as may be the case for other crimes, rape accusations are always true. So, if you admit that there are FRAs, and that they are at least common enough to pop up in prominent news stories and so on, you undermine the entire argument that rape should be treated differently from other crimes — which is the entire thrust of the rape hysteria movement to begin with.

Hess is caught between the small part of her mind which is still reasonable (i.e., which sees that the UVA story was false at least as reported), and the “logic” of the movement to which she belongs, which *needs* FRAs to be a myth in order to make the changes it wants to the legal system. Ultimately this is why I think Hess’s perspective will not prevail among feminists — if it were to prevail, their entire project around rape law would come crashing down around them, and they know that.

Amazing. Sabrina Erdely once did an excellent piece on a cult I used to be in. She infiltrated it by pretending to be interested and almost allowing herself to be “converted.” It’s an excellent write up and it stands as one of the best recent exposés of said group. (She did this long after I had left there.) And it did some real damage to the group. Too bad she didn’t, as your post alleges, research this story with the same amount of direct involvement as she did with that one. If she had done on-location interviews and talked to all those involved, the outcome may have been different. you should read this. iv never read anything nicer in my life.

Well yeah…Ryan is fine. Ryan’s great, actually. I mean he’s smart. He’s attractive. He’s funny. He’s a scaredy cat. If you creep up behind him, he’ll jump right out of his skin. It’s pretty amusing. He’s honest. He always calls them just like he sees them. You can constantly count on getting the truth from Ryan, even if the truth hurts. He has the most incredible taste in music. He’s like this walking, talking music library. And he understands how truly important music is. He’s stubborn. He has this regimented way about him that can be so frustrating sometimes. And sometimes the things he says hurt. But he’s a really, really good friend. And loyal to a fault. He’s realistic about everything. And I’m a dreamer so I mean, it’s good to have somebody like that in my life. He’s one of my best friends here, you know? He’s more than that …he’s everything

So, then there’s Ryan. And Ryan…Ryan’s incredible. I didn’t fall for Ryan Duffin the first day I met him. Nor did I fall for him on the second day or the third day for that matter. But once I did fall for Ryan, you see, my world flipped upside down. Kathryn doesn’t understand what I see in Ryan. I guess I don’t understand what she doesn’t see in him. He’s gorgeous, but gorgeous is an understatement. More like you’re startled every time you see him because you notice something new in a Where’s Waldo sort of way. More like you can’t stop writing third grade run on sentences because you can’t even remotely begin to describe something, someone, so inherently amazing. More like you’re afraid that if you stare at him too long, you’ll prove your grandparents right that, yes, your face will get stuck that way…but you don’t mind. You, like everyone else, may think I’m exaggerating, but then again, you probably don’t know Ryan Duffin. Ryan has no idea what he does to me…he can make me feel more emotions in one second then I would normally feel in one year. He makes my head spin. And the truth is, I’m crazy about him. I mean, if I had the choice of hanging out with anyone in the entire world or just sitting in my dorm with him talking about music and watching a crappy TV show…I’d choose him everytime…without a single false step. I know he doesn’t like me. If someone really wanted you, they’d actually put some time and effort into trying to get your attention. Ryan doesn’t even like to be around me sometimes. And that really sucks. When you like someone more than he likes you, you’ll do anything to switch the scales. The thing is, you can’t. You want to tell him how you feel but you know it will end with “It’s just not going to work out.” How can I explain to him that I fell for him because of a million tiny things he never knew he was doing? I know I should just stop trying because he and I are never going to happen. He doesn’t like me, I’m not his type, I’m not the type of person he could ever be with so I should just get over it. The problem is I can’t shake these feelings I have for him, I try so damn hard, but they won’t go away. I can’t move on because the only thing I can find wrong with him, is that he can find so much wrong with me. [Redacted] said I shouldn’t give up. She said she read this quote once that said,” There’s nothing more beautiful than the way the ocean refuses to stop kissing the shoreline, no matter how many times it’s sent away.” She claimed that’s how Ryan and I are. I think she’s wrong. I think he was right from the get-go. He’ll never see me as anything more than some girl and it’ll never amount to anything. He told Alex I’m not his type and I’m a waste of his time. The things he says hurt more than you know but still…there’s something about him that makes me come back for more. All I know is, the girl who gets to be with Ryan Duffin is the luckiest girl in the world. And if she doesn’t know that, then she doesn’t deserve him.

More and more men are choosing internet porn over marriage therefore the cause is internet porn. They might as well done a study on homeless men living under bridges. With more and more men choosing to live under bridges, bridges must be the cause of homelessness. The reason men live under bridges is because they have no choice. Society has taken everything away from them and left them no means to provide for themselves. Ditto pornography. Men having analyzed all of the costs of marriage today vs the limited or non-existent benefits are choosing not to marry. Pornography is just a way to relieve stress without emptying your bank account.

  48. GottliebPins says:

Back on topic there’s an easy way to prevent false rape accusations while at the same time reducing the hysteria of rape culture. Just as you need evidence to convict someone, which is the reason why most supposed rape “victims” never go to the police since they lack any, proper evidence can also prove you did not commit a crime. The real cause of rape culture on campus is not horrible mean abusive men, it’s alcohol. When you mix alcohol and sex people make poor choices, especially when they are young and have limited experience with both. When a man and woman get drunk and have sex and the next day the woman wakes up and realizes she’s in someone else’s bed and has no memory of how she got there it must be the man’s fault. He must have drugged or got her drunk and taken advantage of her because she never would have slept with him if she were sober. Even if she was the one buying the drinks its still his fault. But proving it was rape is not so easy. If she was beaten or forced into sex there would be evidence that the police could see and guilt established but if it was consensual and she has no idea whether it was or not then it’s he says vs she says. Which is why it never gets reported and instead she waits weeks, months, or even years before telling friends, family, and the world the Mr. X raped her, leading to the rape culture hysteria. There’s nothing Mr. X can do then to clear his name should she have left enough clues for the media to track him down. Hence the need for real evidence.

Now a man could agree to have a chaperone present during the whole encounter to make sure that everything was consensual, but finding a non-biased friend that both could agree on with such short notice would probably be problematic and having a third person present during sex to make sure at no time did the woman say “no” would probably be too kinky for most people. So the next best thing, and I’m sure feminists will hate this idea is, video tape the entire encounter. So that months or years later when the woman wants to drag your name through the mud, or sue you, or extort money from you, all you have to do is agree to go to court, and during the proceedings introduce into evidence the video tape of the entire evening. The jury can then watch as the evening unfolds from the living room to the bedroom as both engage in and seemingly enjoy themselves right up until they both fall asleep in each others arms. Not even the most radical man hating feminist will be able to say it was forced sex. Case closed, man’s honor restored.

Now the feminists will scream, how dare he record their intimate encounter! For this very reason of course! They will say, well let the woman make the video so she can prove it was rape. That’s fine for her but it doesn’t protect the one being accused. It leaves all the evidence in the hands of the accuser and she can just conveniently forget where she put the tape and it’s back to she said vs he said. And whatever you do DO NOT let her know you have the tape, DO NOT share it on YouTube or with friends. Log ALL of your sexual encounters or even if you THINK you might be having sex with someone later, unless of course you’re in a long term relationship with someone and by that most people would admit it was consensual. If you let her know you have taped evidence then of course she will run to the police and tell them you’re a pervert and have you arrested, even though she would gladly have you arrested for the crime of rape if you did not have the evidence to prove you did not, you will be the monster. And don’t let her know you have the evidence before trial to try to get out on a plea deal. A rape accusation is big news and gets big publicity. If you are accused of rape and the charges are dropped prior to going to court, the accusation is still out there to haunt you forever. They must have made a plea deal, he probably bribed or threatened her. If publicity is what she and the media whores want to advance their feminist cause, then give them all the publicity they will hate. Proving the accusations false publicly will defeat them and set them back years every time they try it. Eventually people will stop believing their false narrative. Being a gentleman is not good enough in this war. You will get stomped on.

  49. Correct, no deals. Don’t even mention that you have video taped evidence until such time as you go to court. Then produce it in court. Her attorney will object. The objection will be overruled. She’ll cry and run out of the courtroom and the jury and the judge will wait until she comes back (IF she comes back, she might just drop the charges right then.)

  50. GottliebPins says:

If the court rejects the evidence on grounds that you did not get permission to video tape her, which of course is your only evidence of innocence, then accidentally release the video into the cloud. These things happen unfortunately, blasted technology! Your right to defend yourself against false accusations should not be trumped by her right to privacy. Cover up the naughty bits if you like.

  51. If the court rejects the evidence on grounds that you did not get permission to video tape her, which of course is your only evidence of innocence, then accidentally release the video into the cloud.

The court really can’t do that. The video evidence is your property and since you are in the video and you never sold it someone else for money, you can do whatever you want with it. In this case you are using it to prove your innocence.

Note to lurkers: As a rule, free legal advice from comments on web sites is worth exactly what you paid to read it.

Different countries have different rules regarding recording people without their knowledge, and in the US different states also have different rules. The action of recording a police officer, or a sexual encounter, without notice is an action that is harmless in one state but might well be the crime of “wiretapping” in another state.

Anyone who wants to know the law for their jurisdiction should consider paying an attorney or other advocate to advise them. At least then there’s someone to go stand with you in front of a court.

Funny thing, I’m told by old people that in the 50’s booze was strictly limited or prohibited on college campuses in the US. Some places sold a limited amount of beer, but that was rare.

Starting in 1968, though, the rules about booze on campus gradually went away. And now here we are.

So the real cause of “rape culture” is obvious: the Baby Boomers.

  54. Escoffier says:

Funny thing, I’m told by old people that in the 50’s booze was strictly limited or prohibited on college campuses in the US.

I’ve read the opposite. Memoirs from people who went to college in the ’50s say booze was everywhere. More strictly regulated at the girls’ schools (which took in loco very seriously then) but then the girls just went to parties at the boys’ colleges where booze flowed freely.

FWIW, Animal House is set in the early ’60s and is based or at least inspired by a few guys’ real life experience at Dartmouth arond 1962.

However, it’s true that it was in the late 60s/early 70s that more or less the entire sex segration regime, visiting hours, open doors policy, curfews, etc. suddenly went away along with the rest of in loco. Tom Wolfe has written some funny and informative stuff about how quickly this happened.

  55. Escoffier says:

    Completely agree regarding legal advice.

It’s laughable to think that in these biased tribunals designed to punish boys/men over regretted encounters, in which they can’t introduce exculpatory evidence or defend themselves in any way, the admission that you made a salacious and possibly illegal tape is going to make the witch-hunters go easier on you. No, it will just be added to the charges against you and used to increase your sentence.

Another piece of idiocy from a reliable source of it …

Probably a wide variation across the country. Remember that in the 50’s and 60’s some states were still “dry”, i.e. sale or possession of booze was still prohibited. Not counties (there may still be a few in Texas or Oklahoma, etc.) but entire states.

FWIW, Animal House is set in the early ’60s and is based or at least inspired by a few guys’ real life experience at Dartmouth arond 1962.

Possible sample error; “Dartmouth” != “all colleges”. A number of good sized universities such as Baylor were originally started by church denominations. Quite a few Enormous State U’s took that loco parentis thing more seriously as well. Maybe there was a blind eye turned to some boozing, but the official policy? No booze for students. Go off campus for that.

However, it’s true that it was in the late 60s/early 70s that more or less the entire sex segration regime, visiting hours, open doors policy, curfews, etc. suddenly went away along with the rest of in loco.

That’s pretty much what I’ve been told by mulitple sources, alumnae of both private and state uni’s. What I hear now from current college students or recent grads is not quite Girls Gone WIld but pretty close at times. There’s probably a market in at least some college towns for off campus housing that would enforce segregation by sex, visiting hours, curfews, alcohol limitations / prohibitions, and so forth. At least for women students.

Maybe if the editors of Rolling Stone had read I Am Charlotte Simmons at some point in the last few years, they’d not have been so stupid as to run the UVA rape-a-matic moral panic story with no fact checking.

But, eh, fact checking is so 20th century.

It’s a shame, isn’t it? If we can’t rely on random legal advice from self-contradictory multiple-personality entities infesting comboxes, what can we trust?

It’s almost enough to make a man lose faith in humanity.

Apparently for the last two years UVA authorities were walking the tight rope between:

    a) Being politically-correctly compassionate to the victim of horrible gangrape “Jackie” and letting her spread her fantasy story all over the campus via the RapeSurvivorSupportCovenTherapeuticGossipNewsAgency.

    and

    b) Being politically-correctly compassionate to the victim of horrible gang rape “Jackie” and respecting her wish not to formally engage the police, campus kangaroo court or even just dean Eramo, to do something serious about her alleged gangrapists walking freely on campus grounds.

And it seemed to work pretty well, until Sabina Rubin Ederly discovered her and made her “The National Queen of Campus Rape Culture”. At that point the fantasy story collapsed under its own weight. And now poor politically correct educators are in an unpleasant damned-if-you-do-damned-if-you-don’t position.

    Revolution eats her own.
