A movie so feminist, it makes men and women cry?

Red Pill Latecomer pointed out that I left out the special women only viewings Alamo Drafthouse is holding for Wonder Woman, and the feminist outrage when the double standard was pointed out:

It’s time to pour one out for the countless male tears that are being shed in Austin, Texas over a grave injustice some men feel is being committed against the fragile male species.

I left this out of my previous post for brevity, but it is true that both the women only showings and (much worse) the feminist screeching that followed could have posed a risk to the success of the movie*.  Luckily for the creators of Wonder Woman, aside from a few exceptions there hasn’t been much focus on the all women showings and the feminist harpies screeching about men invading their space.  It isn’t the feminist philosophy audiences would object to, but how dour and ugly the feminist aesthetic is.  People want to have fun at the movies, not be scolded by a women’s studies major.

There is still time, however, for ugly feminists to ruin the perception of the movie before it opens this weekend.  USA Today and the woman who directed the movie did their part today with Why are women crying when they watch ‘Wonder Woman’ fight?

Director Patty Jenkins has grown accustomed to hearing stories about audience members welling up as Gal Gadot, playing DC Comics heroine Diana Prince, grabs her shield and sword and plunges into battle in the new superhero epic (in theaters Thursday night).

“I didn’t even realize I needed this,”says Jenkins, who makes history as the first woman to helm a superhero movie. “I didn’t realize that I needed to let this out, that’s what I was tasked with. But it opened a door to all the expressions of this superhero, all the dimensions of a woman that maybe we haven’t seen or felt.”

*The men black knighting by threatening to show up to the women-only screenings are funny but don’t pose a threat to the perception of the movie. Most people don’t take feminists seriously regarding their claims of wanting equality, so the charge of hypocrisy doesn’t really have any currency. The only real threat would come from the demand from feminists to “Take me seriously!” that the black knighting can provoke.

  2. In the early “non-review reviews”, this kept coming up from female reviewers. I’m still really puzzled what the scene is supposed to be. I think it might be that one of the Amazonians is killed and maybe Wonder Woman goes Hulk on the situation?

I conjecture it taps into the maternal protection instinct, but I’m still at a loss. Not that I’ll watch the movie.

It’s all lies; solipsistic, vain-glorious, self-serving lies told in an effort to wring out as much triggering among emotionally disturbed women as possible. The “male tears of impotence”, the “female tears of empowerment”; all bald-faced lies of propaganda no different than the lies that Gashed-Busters was Feminism’s coming-out moment.

Movies like this are not really made for the domestic market, anyway. Fast and Furious 8, which was a complete flop in North America, cleared a billion dollars in Asia.

The reason the big studios don’t make films for Americans is because they don’t need to.

I have just gatecrashed a woman’s only screening of the trailer on my lap-top. So far as I could tell the heroine is in the trenches in Flanders in WW1 and is able to use her shield to deflect German bullets. The film appears as such to be an insult to the memory of the men both Allied and Axis who died in that terrible conflict.

I see people have forgotten Kathryn Flicker (onetime squeeze of James James Cameron Cameron) who made several action-based flicks, though admittedly not superhero stories. There’s Zero Dark Thirty, which feminists don’t mention even though it has a female hero and meets the Bechdel test of a scene of two women having a discussion not about a man. Then there’s Before Dark, Strange Days, The Hurt Locker, Point Blank. She is real good at suspense and surprise “jump” shots. Not so much at pleasing women studies majors. Hell, though it’s timeline is dated, “Strange Days” is rather perverse.

“Can you elaborate more, for those of us with no military background?”

My biggest gripe was the main character’s recklessness. A reckless EOD Soldier wouldn’t live long. They got his personality so wrong, that it was like they deliberately set out to slander EOD Soldiers. By the way, I’m not an EOD Soldier, but my instructors at the EOCA course were, and as a Combat Engineer, I worked with lots of them. They’re not crazy adrenaline junkies. You can’t be in that line of work.

On top of that, the EOD team in the movie drove around Iraq in one Humvee, not in a convoy, which would be suicidal. Their three-man team cleared an entire industrial building that would require an entire infantry company to clear. The EOD team members were better snipers than the snipers.

    That’s what I remember.

  21. Mandy says:

Well, a truly original storyline would have the German soldiers as the good guys.

While attractive, at 32, Gadot is ancient by Hollywood standards. And Robin Wright, oh dear, what can I say? She is very sinewy a la Madonna of late.

  22. Fifty Seven says:

The Hurt Locker deficiencies. This is from memory, having seen the movie once.

    M68s don’t zoom.
You don’t drive around by yourself, as mentioned above.
A Humvee left parked in an Iraqi city and unattended would not be there when you got back. If it was, it would be stripped to the axles. If it wasn’t stripped, it’s probably booby trapped.
The main character was a nutcase who wouldn’t have lasted a month as a team leader.
“Spit and rub!” What? Why not just pull the rounds out and wipe them off? And that Barrett would probably chamber and fire them just fine.
I can’t speak for everyone, but I never met or heard of any crazy English bounty hunters.

“How did your man get shot?”
“Oh, I told him to clear an entire street by himself.”
    “Okay, you’re going to Leavenworth.”

I’m sure there are more that I just don’t remember. The Hurt Locker is a totally awesome and very realistic war movie, if everything you know about war comes from CNN footage and Vietnam War “We Are The True Monsters” type movies (lookin’ at you, Ollie).

  23. Fifty Seven says:

“Well, a truly original storyline would have the German soldiers as the good guys.”

Would you be interested in my screenplay, “The Manchurian Cherry Blossom”? it’s about a strong and independent young Japanese woman who finds fulfillment and love as a budding member of Unit 731.

-That’s the rub, right there, Dalrock.
Women don’t believe in things eternal. They want earthly monuments with which to be remembered by. This is why they were never given the reins of things spiritual in churches for 2 millennia. They do, however, want to ”make history” by being ”first woman to do…” something a man has already done.
I won’t be seeing the movie. Just the shorts were bad enough for me. Apart from the obvious feminist theme, I’m just sick and tired of Germans – who I work with and have been the most kind and hospitable people to me and my family – being the bad guys in movies all the time. 100% true. Many people don’t understand the ethnic angle behind the anti German/Russian attitudes of the movie producers/writers/financiers in Hollywood.

Why isn’t Wonder Woman fighting the Communists? Communism, the most mass murderous ideology in history, has murdered 100 plus million people in the last 100 years. Joel Stein’s article about Hollywood in the L.A. Times might help answer that question.

Way to mark myself as a nerd with this as my first post here (hey Mr Dalrock), but there are a decent number of fans happy to finally see some DC films that take place in a world that at least vaguely resembles the DCU. Not that BvS and SS (great property, great disappointment) weren’t deeply flawed, but there are decades of rich, mythological-level narrative material to draw from, so if the WW reviews are any indication, hopefully DC is getting its act together.

WW probably benefits from a) not having to introduce 100 characters and subplots and b) no Snyder, a solid visualist but a truly shallow director. (FWIW I’m not particularly a WW fan, don’t know her lore much, other than that the backstory was largely rewritten in the 80s, so the WW of today probably bears little resemblance to the Lynda Carter version.) As for feminist themes, nobody going to this movie gives a damn. But hopefully Chris Pine adds a liberal dose of chauvinist flavor.

My father saw the poster and murmured that this new actress looked very young compared to Lynda Carter, and I agreed. But, interestingly, a quick wiki search shows Carter was ~24 when her show first aired, and Gadot was 30+ while filming for BvS and WW.

Boxer is right. WW can flop and we’ll still get Justice League, Flash, Aquaman, etc. Eat it!

jg1: How about the movie Hidden Figures?

Some articles discussed the lies in Hidden Figures. The script was written without reference to the book, which was not yet finished. So the screenwriter “made up” stuff for “dramatic purposes.”

    * The movie portrays racially segregated bathrooms at NASA. Not true. The book’s author (one of the black women mathematicians) says that NASA treated everyone in a respectful and equal manner.

    * The movie shows an IBM technician delivering a computer to NASA. Then this technician, and all the NASA guys, don’t know how to get it running. This black woman walks by, sees them having trouble, butts in and gets the computer up and running in a jiffy. Again, a lie. That was not in the book.

And it’s such a stupid lie. You mean an IBM technician wouldn’t know how to operate his own company’s computer? And this woman, just passing by, immediately figures it out?

And schools are showing Hidden Figures to kids as though it were a history lesson.

I didn’t see Hidden Figures. This is just what I read about it.

I think people will also go to see how filmmakers are doing fleshing out the DC cinematic universe and how it will stack up against Marvel. DC has a lot of catching up to do. My own daughter will drag me to it for this reason; not because she wants to see a grrrrl power movie.

What I don’t get is how the “woman only” showings don’t violate federal antidiscrimination laws… Movie theaters are places of public accommodation and aren’t allowed to keep people out on the basis of race or sex. I’m sure there’s some way around it; like “It’s only one showing” or “men can come see it other times in other separate theaters at our multiplex 65-screen complex”. Theaters couldn’t show a movie that was “blacks only” or “whites only”.

I think you are right, the movie will probably do fine, perhaps quite well. Gadot is suitably hot, so men and women will want to go. Her being a badass will be a plus for the average viewer, so long as it doesn’t feel like being lectured to by humorless feminists. One of the complaints by feminists is that TV advertising didn’t start as early for WW as it did for Batman V. Superman. I think the marketers understood that the longer the full publicity hype was, the longer feminists had to overdo the feminist angle. Everyone knows it is feminist, but they don’t want it to feel feminist.

I think it just proves that women can’t do anything by themselves and that men are the ones who make it happen.

Women only places, I laugh at them, and the more the double standard is upheld, the more MGTOW and the like grow, grow and grow and if anything, MGTOW is a male only space that will not be entered into by women. Male fragility, as if, women can’t take being starved of attention, they can’t take not being allowed that attention, they are so scared of men getting together and doing stuff without them there to scold and control. Weak. They should applaud male only spaces as the source of all the comforts they hold dear. Looks like you missed the point. Women have always gone for the first, the last, or the middle position. Their positions change with whatever benefits them at the moment. The “strong and independent women who can do anything that men can do, only better”, are the same women who are “triggered” by any idea they don’t like. The women who want their place at the battle fronts and the same women who are in fear for their lives during a domestic dispute, though their husbands/boyfriends are totally harmless.

“Liberal Christians in 1966 could proffer the poor excuse that the experiment was untried, that they did not know any better, that Jesus did not really condemn sins of the flesh, and that the times they were a-changing. Christians fifty years later do not have even that excuse. The experiment has been an unmitigated disaster. Those fences? They’re levees, not fences. The churches took down those levees and erected signs in their place, reading, ‘Now, above all, be nice.’ The rain has come, the river has risen, it has broken down the few untended levees remaining and buried the pretty little signs under hundreds of feet of mud, and water that once did productive work for mankind now spreads like a vast malarial marsh over what used to be fields and farms and villages, simmering and breeding vermin in the sun. Christians must repudiate the whole sexual revolution. All of it. No keepsakes, no exceptions. Remember Lot’s wife” (pp. 92-93).

Game of Thrones was patriarchal in its first season. But by now many of the men have died, and it’s full of bad-ass women. Women warriors — Arya, Briene, the Dorne sisters. Queens and priestesses — Danaryus, Cersie, Sansa, the Red Priestess. And plenty of gay characters.

Penny Dreadful began as classic horror. By the third season it was thoroughly feminized. We had suffragette marches. The Bride of Frankenstein organizing a gang of whores to kill men in a feminist revolution. A Strong Independent Woman who outwitted both Dracula and Satan. A Lara Craft type character kicking vampire butt. And gay characters.

Then there are shows I haven’t seen, but have heard of. Such as Orange Is the New Black, about women in prison — including lesbians and trannies.

All these shows, and others like them, are popular and critically acclaimed. So the movies might die, but feminism continues on HBO, Showtime, and Netflix.

Ridley Scott’s newest Alien film is Alien Covenant. The lead is, once again, a kick-ass woman.

The film also has a gay couple. Genre fans are having a contentious discussion about this in the comment section: http://www.fandango.com/movie-news/10-things-we-learned-from-visiting-the-alien-covenant-set-plus-new-poster-and-images-751976

I mostly liked the Alien films. But alas, now it’s not only feminist, it’s gay. As is Penny Dreadful and Game of Thrones. I can’t get away gays on screen these days, not unless I stick to older movies and shows. Which is what I’m increasingly doing.

I still don’t understand why guys are grousing about one movie theatre having a women-only premiere of one movie.

try having a male only or hetero only viewing and see how many lawsuits you can lose.

  66. Emperor Constantine says:

Mad Men, IT Crowd, Ray Donovan, and on and on: the first season is hard core masculine, powerful stuff which means the woman play their natural, secondary role. Inevitably by the third or fourth season girl power re-asserts and the quality goes downhill. Any series that had the guts to stay with the original masculine formula would go on for decades.

  67. “Looking at the director’s sparse filmography, it’s very strange Warner Bros. handed her the reins to a $150m action flick. Literally the only other theatrical feature film she’s directed was the low-budget drama Monster in 2003. ”

Well, that’s just copying the Marvel movies formula. They’ve been giving tentpole movies to directors who have previously made small-budget but well-crafted movies and it’s worked so far, so now DC is trying the same strategy.

  68. “Why isn’t Wonder Woman fighting the Communists?”

Because we were never in open war against the USSR, so Wonder Woman couldn’t wear her cool superhero outfit to fight it.

What is bad is that these big-budget productions are so much worse than the 1970s cartoons (which were actually good) :

Man, this is actually good content :

  71. Red Pill Latecomer says:

The first TV Wonder Woman, Cathy Lee Crosby, was dressed far more conservatively:

Crosby’s Wonder Woman fought an arms dealer who, it was implied, was about to sell secrets to the Communists.

By day, she worked as a secretary at an American spy agency. It was her disguise. Sort of like Superman disguised as Clark Kent.

  72. Frank K says:

None of DC‘S live action heroes is doing anything for me these days. Ditto with the current crop of cartoon movies. Case in point: the old Teen titans show is far better than the two TT cartoon movies recently released

  73. The Old Sarge says:

What people seem to be missing in the kerfuffle about women-only screenings of the new Blunder Woman movie is that the black/dark knights are simply turning Alinsky’s tactics back on the Leftoids: Make ’em live by their own rules. You demand equality, missie? You got it. We’re coming into your movie. And we dare you to try to have us removed.

does somebody want to explain to me again why legalizing sodomy and allowing women to vote were good ideas? because i REALLY am having a hard time understanding how this makes my society a better place to live.

No, not now. It always has been. What are the Aliens? They are a matriarchal society of beings who force oral sex on men so to further force them to bear their children and die.

I was sort of interested in Vikings at first, because there seemed to be a real effort towards some historical accuracy. However as soon as women began showing up in melee or battle, I was done.

I mostly liked the Alien films. But alas, now it’s not only feminist, it’s gay.

The very first Alien film was about a Strong, Independent Woman. I would argue it was the first one, compare it with anything else in that time period. Jamming homosexuals into stories is now expected.

    @Iowa Slim
I bet that NY Times article is just a rehash of the same old stuff feminists have been shoving for 30+ years. The sort of stuff that leads to boys catapulting dolls across the back yard and girls driving their toy trucks to the store, to the school, etc. They keep denying reality and science – no, dearie, your daughter is not just like your son except for genitals and secondeary characteristics. Thanks to the power of Testosterone his brain is differently wired from hers.
