As a matter of mercy, I thought I would include some manly videos this Friday after the sickening fruitiness of Tim Keller’s Redeemer Presbyterian Church worship video.
First up is a compilation of knife and sword tests from the reality show “Forged in Fire”.
In my opinion Doug Marcaida steals the show, and the next three videos feature him. In this first Marcaida video he explains the philosophy of Kali martial arts on weapons. His language is unashamedly masculine, and at the 2:20 mark he describes the fun of training with his brothers.
Next, Marcaida (a knife fighter) teams up with Instructor Zero (a gun fighter) to develop strategies for a gunfighter attacked by a knife. You can also see in a separate video Marcaida referring to Zero as his brother.
In this final video Marcaida demonstrates the Karambit. This is truly brutal business:
Here’s how European Longswords are actually used. Their astonishingly fast and would be quite devastating. This is called HEMA (Historical European Martial Arts).

OT: ‘THE UGLINESS OF MEANINGLESS SEX IS THE STRONGEST ARGUMENT AGAINST IT’
http://womenspeakforthemselves.com/the-ugliness-of-meaningless-sex-is-the-strongest-argument-against-it/
They go off a Cosmo article where college girls from Syracuse rationalize why they have cheap sex and give a brief shout out to why the Catholic church teaches what it does about sex and marriage. This I thought this was the funny money quote from the Cosmo story where you can tell there’s something fishy.
‘Guys are resistant to giving girls a chance, or even getting to know you, unless you have sex with them. But once you have sex with them, most of them are done with you!’
So they blame men for not going on a date with them and blame men for having sex with them and leaving. I’d ask these girls this question…if you are doing something you know isn’t going to work, why are you doing it? Unless that was their intention all along (following their feels).
Ever notice on Forged Doug always has the fun grin as he says “your blade Will Cut”.
If you need some manliness in art form, look no further than the U.S. Army Chorus singing the Battle Hymn of the Republic
That’s better, the video with the hat is excellent. A sharp #2 pencil would add to the toolset, because the mind is the weapon. Knife vs. gun reminds me of Dennis Tueller, who did the first even halfway real research on that topic with results that influenced the whole world.Pretty sure he’s retired now, but still around and thinking about things.
The Karambit is an interesting tool but no way to carry one in the US without attracting attention sooner or later. Other tools will work almost as well and can be justified in many states. There is an older video called “Surviving Edged Weapons” that may still be out in the world, possibly only on VHS. It’s something every man should view, frankly, just to be aware of what even an amateur can do to the unaware.
By the way, ar10308 and others, Texas law this month reduced limits on the blade size than can be carried in public. “Open carry for swords” is an exaggeration because there are still prohibited places, but if a man wants to wear his Bowie knife on the streets of Laredo, it’s legal now.

This explains a lot.

I work outside. Handiest weapon is probably my long skinny screwdriver. Under ordinary circumstances, it’s just another tool in my pouch; also it looks fairly innocuous and it is not hard to conceal if needed. I’d prefer a gun, but nobody I work for will allow employees to carry one or have one in the work vehicle. But I’m always carrying that screwdriver. Have never come close to having to draw it on a bad guy, but would never say never. Now that I’ve watched that LA Sheriffs Baton video, I should probably also carry an 18″ section cut off an old broom handle, have that in the vehicle under the seat or something.
From the third video: “Weapons are made to be felt, not seen.”
Appreciate The Question’s answer. It’s really tempting to trawl through a lot of hero-action movies all the way back to the silent era for more palate cleansing. Thought about this over lunch, and decided against almost all of them in favor of one film from the 1970’s that is available for viewing, and based on a book written in the 1960’s. Both with the same title, The Outlaw Josey Wales.
A lot of readers may not know this film and won’t bother to search for the story. So I will set it up.
The year is 1865, Reconstruction has not yet begun.
Southern outlaw Josey Wales and the people with him are now trying their hand at ranching in far West Texas, within the wandering range of a band of Comanche Indians led by Ten Bears. The Comanche have captured two of the ranch hands and buried them in the ground up to their necks. It is likely they will be tortured to death.
The ranching group is fortified in an adobe dugout house, with all the guns they have loaded and lined up along the walls, because all guns of that time loaded from the muzzle and most were single-shot. They expect the worst, a sudden and remorseless attack by Comanche warriors on horseback that can only be stopped at great price, if at all.
As a guerilla in the Missouri / Arkansas theaters of war, Josey Wales fights from horseback too. Through out the story he is outnumbered in gunfights, from 2 to 1 to much worse, even 10 to 1 but prevails. His weapon load is two Army .44 and one Navy .36 revolvers, and there are more revolvers fastened to the withers of his horse. He is prepared for a fight.
The Outlaw Josey Wales rides out to meet with Comanche Chief Ten Bears.
It is only a movie. Everything is staged. None of the characters on the screen are Christian, either. Which one would y’all prefer to show to young men: Tim Keller’s little ballet, or this?

Gunner Q: Here’s a 1963 training video on police brutality batons from the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department.
I’ll never forget seeing that New York City policewoman who was under five feet “tall.”
She was standing next to a medium-sized policeman (her partner) who towered over her. I pitied that male cop. His partner was completely useless. She couldn’t protect him. She was just another weak point for him to consider whenever confronting potential criminals.
I suppose that, if things got even a little tense, that midget policewoman would immediately have panicked and reached for her gun.
Seeing that 1963 training video is just another reminder of how far our civilization has fallen. Police departments, and the military, full of women playing at being cops and soldiers. Taking up spaces that could have gone to useful men, as in that video. Consuming tax dollars to live their fantasy of being a strong, kick-ass, warrior woman.
Thank you for those Doug Marcaida videos. “Forged in Fire” is quite an entertaining show, I recommend it. And it’s educational!
I’ve always thought most tools could be used as weapons should the need for defense arise.

Geeze, Earl…you mean, like a baseball cap?
“No wonder there was less crime back then”
Actually, there is no more crime today than in 1963. Crime went up in the 70s and 80s, then plummeted thereafter.

Great….now I have to go watch LA Confidential again….. 😉
I am quite skeptical of that. I would want to see statistics. Society has definitely worsened and things that would be rare are much more common now. Some could be that many groups can get away with a lot more. Another could be that reporting statistics have changed.
Claiming society is not worse is dubious at best.

LOL…I don’t know if he was saying that to amplify the first ammendment, or he knew it was going to offend her into her pulling the plug.
In any case we all know women are offended by the thought men like breasts. That’s why they never wear low cut shirts or dress in any way to highlight them.

I guess he was just rattling her chain. He did a good job, and yes if she is so offended that men like boobs she should be wearing a low cut top. Who’s the boob now?
Here’s some of my favorite fight scenes, since it looks like we are having a bloody smorgasbord here:
First, from the remake of Chinese Connection, Fist of Legend by Jet Li:
And here is that movie’s main antagonist Billy Chow:
Next, Tony Jaa fighting a capoeira fighter. Truly a masterpiece of choreography. The story I’ve read is that Tony Jason himself requested this particular fighter, and I see why:
Finally, from the movie Who Am I, this rooftop fighting scene by Jackie Chan:
Truly, it is awesome being a man!
And before I forget, I recommend the movie Arn The Knight Templar. I think it is embellished somewhat regarding it’s historical accuracy, but it is a pretty good movie regardless, especially considering it takes places, of all places, Sweden.
These are not fighting but can serve as palate cleansers just as well:
And from RTE documentary series ‘Hands’ :
If you’re gonna purge that crap from your consciousness, do it right:
Thanks for this post, Dalrock. Given enough time, I may even forgive you for posting the “ballerina” video.

Yeah, that’s a load of crap. Furthermore, the reason violent crime rates dropped after peaking in 1993 is that the incarceration rate increased, not because of a sudden outbreak of morality. It’s a lot harder to victimize people (other than your fellow prisoners) when you’re in prison.
Returning to the OP there are two important things worth noting in that “gun vs. knife” vid. I post this for lurkers, not for the ankle biters. Dennis Tueller set out to answer a specific question, not carve some rule in granite – he’d be the first to say that.
First, Marcaida knows what he’s about when he says he won’t start waving his knife at 7 meters / 21 feet. Not new, either. Science fiction writer R. A. Heinlein had a character say “Never let him see the knife” back in the 60’s, and for sure he was just quoting someone else from a previous time. A “bum’s rush” in the street is likely to have a blade hiding in there, the Italian video is very instructive in that way.
Second, the “expert gun fighter” isn’t moving, he’s planted in cement right there until he starts doing gymnastics. Backing up as fast as the rusher is coming in is an option. Side stipping off the line of attack is another option. Neither are possible to a man who isn’t situationally aware.
Now the value add, that has been obvious to many for years but I just got it recently: social awareness is just another form of situational awareness. Calibrating to people around you is part of both social and situational awareness. I know, duh. But there it is.
@ar10358 Elegant stuff.
Here’s it all slowed down to show the moving parts and outcomes.
Of course if you’re Russian and skint, can’t afford a huge sword, there’s always this
My preference every time, and a great workout.
Many instructors, such as Dan Insanto for example, covered the same ground from the early 1970’s on in the U.S.. The thing about the Pinoy martial art of Kali is that originally it incorporated witch craft. Amongst modern practitioners, outside of the Philippines anyways, the occultic rituals are all discarded today (though the drums are often still employed). But the occult origins was enough for me to avoid it. I ended up taking Gracie jiu-jitsu instead and along the line becoming acquainted with some of their knife defense techniques. Honestly, I treat others with respect and seek to live at peace with them. The best solution is never to have the problem. And if I do end up in a situation where someone pulls out a knife on me, I’m going to try running away like the wind.
@Oscar
Unfortunately American prisons are notorious for their rape. Such an offence deserves the death penalty.
Many prisoners need to be six feet under.
