Hooah!

As I showed in my last post the movie Indivisible teaches a well worn and well loved modern Christian message that God wants wives not to submit to their husbands, but to threaten their husbands to make them change.

The movie follows modern Christian traditions in other ways.  While the message of the movie includes the same anti husband/married father message that pastors deliver on Father’s Day, it is important to keep the appearance that it is traditional.  This means tearing down not just any husband/father, but tearing down the most archetypally masculine husbands and fathers.  This leaves little room for diversity in the Christian husband’s profession when making a movie about marriage.  He has to be both a good man and over the top masculine so that when the movie tears him down the audience knows that all married fathers are failures.  Fireproof featured a fireman who was blowing it.  Courageous featured police officers who were blowing it.  Indivisible does the same for combat veterans. As Heather Turner explains at 1:50 in the clip below:

Them seeing the chaplain, kinda get it wrong, and mess up, gives them permission to be willing to say “you know I might need help.”

And yet we live in a feminist age where any time you present men as masculine you have to show that women are part of the club.  So if Indivisible is going to show masculine men, even just as a way to tear them down, it has to also show a woman who is one of the guys.  10 seconds in to the trailer the soldiers all shout out a manly hooah!  And the face of the manly hooah?  It is of course a woman.

It could be no other way.  The face of the hooah is a kickass single mother, an ex-SWAT team member:

Testing that conviction has to wait as Darren gets to know the soldiers at Forward Operating Base Falcon — including a young father named Lance Bradley (Tanner Stine), single mother and ex-SWAT team member Sgt. Shonda Peterson (Skye P. Marshall) and a bitter, alienated soldier named Michael Lewis (Jason George). In an awkward twist, Lewis also happens to be Darren’s not-so-friendly neighbor at home in Georgia.

I’ve posted this here before…but it’s a really good point.

It’s like the Bill Burr bit where he talks about guys sleeping on the couch because his wife told him to.

I know she can call the police and use the white knight state force…yada yada…point is there is nothing SHE can do.

  4. What a disgraceful film.

You can’t hardly have any conversation with Christians about divorce because any failed marriage is ALWAYS the man’s fault. Even when she’s clearly rebelling.

The church has jumped the shark. It’s all feminism all the time now. The only difference is some cloak it better in traditionalism than others.

“O My people! Their oppressors are children, And women rule over them. O My people! Those who guide you lead you astray And confuse the direction of your paths.”

  6. Lexet Blog says:

The church (Satan) is so eager to show that men drop the ball, that it makes you wonder if the problem solely lies with women, and they are just projecting.

Dalrock, I left a comment on the ‘about’ thread for a film I’d like reviewed, ‘the heart of man.’ It’s a recent (2018) release so it might not have had much screenplay time as yet.
One of the wronged women in the film mentions getting mad to save her marriage. That raised a red flag for me.

My father and surviving uncles were veterans of the Russian Front, that is they were in the German Army. With the horrors they had to endure, some of them in Soviet POW camps after the war, you would think that they would have had rather severe cases of PSTD, and yet after some adjustment to civilian life they became responsible fathers and honourable members of society. None of them had any serious problems with their marriages or their lives in general. Sure there were arguments, but nothing so severe as to warrant a divorce.

The one common denominator to the survival of their marriages was the church. If I could lay my finger on the cause I would like to think that our church at least was pre-feminist in ideology and belief. From what I remember of those days, their view of Christianity was most definitely traditional and it was this tradition which saved the men and women of my father’s generation.

He settled into work, married life and fatherhood despite being given a Bren gun when he was 13. Again, the cushion between him and excessive behavior was faith. He wasn’t a church attended, but he maintained his Catholic beliefs through his life. Probably it is the Christian sense of narrative, where the journey is foremost and feelings are secondary, that helped these men greatly but is now lost.

Dalrock, you’ve been on quite a roll since your “gone fishin'” break!

I’ve noticed over a period of years that your blog has shifted a little bit to discussing Christianity-based issues rather than at-large cultural issues. Not being a Christian, I usually don’t comment on those posts because I don’t have much to add.

But one of the things I’ve realized since I started reading your blog is how much Christianity is a cornerstone of Western culture. When I was a teenager, I couldn’t understand why Christians were always thumping their bibles and telling people what to do. I used to think, “Why can’t Christians just let people do what they want to do?”

At this point in my life, the answer to that is pretty clear. Collectively, when people just follow their base instincts and desires, things start to come unglued… which in itself leads to the at-large cultural issues.

  17. Sharkly says:

    Greenlander,
I’d encourage you to read the Bible and learn more about what is being thumped. I’d recommend starting with the New Testament first before the Old Testament.

Before I married my wife two years ago, she had huge amounts of debt to her name, including large amounts of student loans. After we married, we diligently almost paid everything off, helped by my salary being three times that of my wife.

She recently asked for a divorce, saying she was taking the house and my retirement.

That is one cold, heartless woman.

  19. feeriker says:

  20. greenlander says:

    @Sharkly,

That’s not bad advice. But actually, I did read the Bible one summer when I was a university student.

Your advice to start with the New Testament is pretty good. I started with the Old Testament, and almost gave up on reading the Bible after that. A one-line summary of the Old Testament might be, “God played a lot of cruel head games on everyone.” After read the New Testament, it was hard for me to grok the concept that they are both about the same God.

Reading the Bible and even attending a Baptist church for at time didn’t make me a believer, but I came to appreciate Christianity. And seeing the decay in Western culture, it’s clear that the world would be a better place if people were thumping their Bibles.. and behaving better in response to the thumping thereof.

I used to love action films. Arnold, Chuck Norris, Bruce Willis, Mel Gibson, Sylvester Stallone. All that stuff in the eighties was super cool to watch. It was clearly over the top, but it wasn’t so bad you couldn’t still make a parody about the genre. That’s why “Hot Shots!” was funny.

But then they started making movies like “Stone Cold” with Brian Bosworth and something happened. The films’ silliness became eye-roll worthy.

These movies have done this to marriage.

The reason I want traditionalist protestants and Catholics to converge on Orthodoxy is because it is, the last best hope. I want them to overwhelm it with truly faithful converts who believe EVERYTHING God has to say, not just the parts they like.

Excellent timing for your comment. Only last night I was looking online at the Eastern Orthodox faith and it’s teachings. I have a LOT more reading to do to grasp how the Orthodox compares to the Protestant, but one thing of note; it appears to much more conservative in matters concerning women.

  28. Bruce says:

EO, they allow people to divorce and remarry twice so you’re allowed to continue in adultery for life. This has been the case for a long time.

  29. Scott says:

It’s a little more complicated than that. Divorce is always considered a sin, and the church does not “allow” it. There is no such thing as an Orthodox, or Orthodox sanctioned divorce. The church recognizes that divorces “happen” when one of the two people is acting divorced.

    1. An unrepentant adulterous spouse
    2. A spouse who abandons.

And even then, its still a sin.

Here is the position, spelled out.

    http://www.orthodoxresearchinstitute.org/articles/liturgics/athenagoras_remarriage.htm

  30. Scott says:

It’s important to understand that Orthidoxy does not present a transactional approach to the problem of sin.

Rather sin is always seen as a disease and Christ is the medicine.

Therefore, remarriage, under very specific circumstances is like applying a salve to the painful open wound of being divorced against ones will.

  31. Novaseeker says:

EO, they allow people to divorce and remarry twice so you’re allowed to continue in adultery for life. This has been the case for a long time.

    No.

Divorce is a serious sin in Orthodoxy — one which excommunicates. It is not unforgivable, but there is normally a significant penitential period during which one is excommunicated.

The issue of remarriage after divorce is an issue of pastoral praxis and it depends on what the bishop wants to do. There is no “right” to be remarried in the Orthodox Church — an Orthodox who leaves his wife for his secretary will not be permitted to marry her in the Orthodox Church, for example, nor will a man who has a history of abuse, addiction and so on. However, in many cases the bishop decides that in light of the fact that the divorce, sinful as it was, is an actual reality, it is spiritually more beneficial for the divorced person to be remarried (given the other spiritual benefits of marriage, which are many) than it is for them to remain single given the temptations this involves which were well addressed by Paul himself. This is an exercise of “ekonomia” or “relaxation” of the rules done by the bishop at his discretion as the pastor of the diocese when he judges it to be in the best spiritual interest of the persons involved. This is done with the blessing of the bishop — any moral culpability for the “adultery” taking place rests with the bishop, who is making the judgment that, on balance, it is spiritually more beneficial for the second marriage to take place, under the circumstances.

The Catholics, of course, would allow you to marry the secretary you’re cheating on your wife with, provided you can show them that you didn’t understand or weren’t interested in, following a Catholic marriage at the time you were married, which therefore means you were never actually really married, which means you were never actually really cheating, either.

I bet the marketing of this film will depend heavily on wives demanding that their husbands man-up and attend screenings (licenses all properly paid for out of the collection plate) at their local cineplex/mega church or else. There is something profoundly coercive and manipulative about the whole Evangelical Christian media “ministry,” or rather, business.

  33. BillyS says:

You have been around here long enough to know that the man cheating with anyone is less likely than the woman going all Eat, Pray, Love on her husband. Yet you use the same example as most preachers and ignore the real problem.

I used the male sex because I was responding to a male poster. If you switch the sexes the treatment is the same. A Catholic woman can leave her husband for her personal trainer and marry that personal trainer in the Catholic Church provided she can convince a church tribunal that she didn’t enter her marriage with the full understanding and intention of entering a Catholic marriage. Same thing, either way. They don’t really treat men and women differently in the tribunals, as far as I am aware, although it may be the case that more Catholic divorcees petition for annulments than vice versa.

“Off Topic: this poor schmuck is getting hosed.”

I personally know three men that experienced something very similar. They worked full time and paid the bills while their wives attended school full time. When the wives graduated college (two were advanced degrees, not sure what the third degree was) they started their careers and immediately filed for divorce.

Two were guys I worked with, the third was a neighbor.

The “wives” were practicing stealth prostitution.

  38. Scott says:

I sometimes fail at this so please don’t go looking for someplace where I have been a hypocrite on the matter.

But, I have found that attacking or mischaracterising the other position to be ineffective as a way to get folks over to your “side.”

I presume for example that folks who really believe in reform doctrines like the elect, eternal security and progressive sanctification arrived at those positions in good faith. I know I did at the time. Heck, it’s why I don’t use pejorative terms like “once saved, always saved.” I try to give the respect of calling them what they want to call them.

Likewise, I find utility and usefulness in the concept of the declaration of nullity (trying to discern if a marriage lacked cononical form to begin with) as it relates to the sacrament of matrimony. It is workable as long as the tribunals and canon lawyers apply the code of canon law (called the rudder in Orthodoxy) according to its spirit and intent (they don’t).

We all know that girl who “got an anullment because my husband was an alcoholic.”

    Tribunal fail.

I’m not even sure why people like that go through the process at all.

In my case, my bias is available for everyone to assess whether it has made me vulnerable to critique. The Orthodox way of applying ekonomia allowed me to marry the woman I thought I was already married to and have victory over the sin and pain of divorce that was thrust upon me.

  39. thedeti says:

@ Oscar: re the guy getting divorced after 2 years and his paying off her student loans:

As for the loans, he’s probably screwed. He won’t get that money back, most likely. Best he can do is sue for fraud (which he probably won’t win if she shows they had something of a “real marriage”) and for offsetting the amounts paid in the divorce settlement.

He might be able to protect his retirement. They were married for only 2 years. It’s the longtime marriages where he usually has to split the retirement with her. Or, they can agree to him keeping his retirement while she gets a larger share of the “marital” assets.

There’s a good argument here for a more equitable split in his favor because the marriage is so brief, where he invested money in it and she invested nothing. HIs argument should be “it’s a very short marriage, it’s tantamount to no marriage at all, she should get almost nothing, she committed a fraud on me by marrying me to extract money from me and now that she’s extracted that money, she wants out. The fair thing to do is to give me more of the assets and keep my retirement intact in exchange for my paying off her student loan debt.”

  40. BillyS says:

    Novaseeker,

Using men as an example irks me because it reinforces the idiot idea that men are normally the problem. Many counselors I have spoken with think that men are the problem as well. I strongly suspect that is because few men come to them for counseling, so they have a skewed data set. Preachers definitely blame men and I do not believe I have heard a single example of a woman being the problem used from a preacher/teacher.

    Scott,

It is good that you don’t seek to insult others (in general at least). We do need to be firm in our beliefs, but let God draw others, something many Christians forget.

I did think you didn’t marry Mychal (sp?) until you had the blessing of your Orthodox church, though it seems you are saying it was different here.

  41. Bruce says:

RE Catholics, if I remember correctly, Zippy was of the opinion that many Catholics, particularly in the West probably don’t have valid marriages since modern people’s understanding of marriage is thoroughly screwed up – what they are consenting to is not marriage.

  42. Oscar says:

It’s important to understand that Orthidoxy does not present a transactional approach to the problem of sin.

Rather sin is always seen as a disease and Christ is the medicine.

See, that right there is a problem. God – in His word – presents the problem of sin as BOTH a “transactional approach” (which is why the Apostle Paul used the banking term, “imputed”, why Jesus told parables about debts being forgiven, and why Abraham’s faith was “accounted [banking term] to him for righteousness”), AND “as a disease and Christ is the medicine” (which is why the Bible presents leprosy as a metaphor for sin in both testaments).

Those of us who endeavor to “believe EVERYTHING God has to say, not just the parts [we] like” have to accept BOTH, whether we like them or not. But, would I be allowed to say so in an Orthodox church?

  43. Gunner Q says:

    @Clarence in Baltimore,
    From Quora:
Frequently, females serve on swat teams as negotiators. It’s arguable that women have some advantages over men in this department. Though it’s really situation specific. If you’re dealing with a guy who is barricaded as a result of some domestic disturbance with his wife, he may not be particularly fond of females at that moment.

Females can also be part of the entry unit. Locally, I have only ever seen one female in that role but it is possible. They just have to be able to pass the same tests as their male counterparts.

As I expected. Los Angeles started SWAT for the specific purposes of serving high-risk criminal warrants and suppressing riots. They didn’t negotiate hostage crises, they didn’t negotiate anything. They kicked in the doors of drug labs and put bracelets on (or bullets in) violent suspects barricaded with their gang buddies. Some Communists, too, like the Symbionese Liberation Army.

Women can’t do that job. I don’t care if they’re allowed, encouraged or even hired, the simple fact is women can’t. The one circus freak quora found counts for nothing but a gender quota.

Police SWATs are promoting females directly to senior positions because she can’t do the actual job, just like the business world. Quite the “advantage over men”, eh? I hope in today’s case, she’s simply a fictitious character. Fiction doesn’t scare me as much as real life.

  44. Bruce says:

“It is not unforgivable, but there is normally a significant penitential period during which one is excommunicated.”

My understanding is that the entire 2nd and 3rd marriage is a penitential period where one is penitent for living in a state of adultery. I do not have a source for this – that is what I was led to believe by some EO.

Feminism is often seen and rightly as even more privilege for upper-middle-class females. It is no surprise then that that trailer for Testament of Youth coming from the BBC begins with an obviously absurd pro-feminist assertion. Name me I ask rhetorically, if you can, one woman who attended Oxford Uni who has any fame other than for being misandrist or doing anything useful!.

Testament of Youth it should then come as no surprise was written by Vera Brittain who as a privileged upper-middle class female attended Somerville College (the women’s college) at Oxford and was a suffragette before WW1 intervened and became (as did my Great Aunt – though she failed to write about it) a VAD nurse. Brittain’s daughter who also attended Somerville is Shirley William (and for whom it was an MRS degree as she there met and married top philosopher Bernard Williams) a former British Cabinet Minister and who was often compared with her tweeds to the lower-middle-class Margaret Thatcher who tended to wear blue frocks (writing this, I almost warm to Thatcher). Naturally Williams was also a left-winger (a member of the so-called Gang of Four – leftists who thought that perhaps things had gone a bit far – or perhaps it was merely a bid for power – which they failed to achieve) who never did a manual job in her privileged life yet spent it trying to tell every one else how she should live theirs. Useless women (mother and daughter).

Apparently it is running now. I have seen only the trailer at the link. There is an obligatory power suit wearing woman apparently in charge of lots of stuff at the Pentagon, but the only other female seen was a watch stander on the sub who supplied critical information to the captain, him being an actual man along with the members of the SEAL team. That is a lot of hollywood restraint for a modern war movie but it was only a trailer, so I wondered if any Dalrock readers have reviewed it?

  56. thedeti says:

They (female SWAT members) kicked in the doors of drug labs and put bracelets on (or bullets in) violent suspects barricaded with their gang buddies.

There’s a theory that women police officers are causing more police shootings and brutality, because women are more likely to draw and fire their weapons. Women are more like to draw and fire because they cannot use brute physical strength to subdue a violent person, or at least they aren’t nearly as good at it. Male police officers, especially large and in-shape ones, are much less likely to use their weapons. They’ll use billy clubs, subduing holds, their sheer imposing size, and their voices, to gain control of a situation.

  57. earl says:

A female police office came into the coffee shop I go to today…she was talking with the barista about all the crazy people that come out on Halloween. She admitted she was a bit crazy herself.

So you have to take that into consideration as well when dealing with female cops. And let’s not forget they might just ‘forget’ which apartment the live in and shoot the guy who is in the apartment they open.

  58. earl says:

I met the person in the diocese I used to live in who was given that task. Basically what they do is try to find every reason why the marriage should stay together and then provide the bishop the reasoning behind if the marriage didn’t exist beforehand. To my understanding they are the detectives who provide the bishop what their findings came up with.

I saw Hunter Killer last Sunday night. It was pretty good. A bit over the top in several places. It is certainly not in the same league as Hunt for Red October. But it’s a moderately enjoyable action movie.

One other feminist sop (probably not shown in the trailer) was portraying the US president as a woman, and a very Hillary-looking one at that. I suspect casting and filming may have taken place before the 2016 election, and everyone was just assuming Hillary would win.

My understanding is that the entire 2nd and 3rd marriage is a penitential period where one is penitent for living in a state of adultery. I do not have a source for this – that is what I was led to believe by some EO.

No. A second marriage is not a penance, and you are not considered by the Orthodox Church to be in a state of sin requiring confession or penitence.

I don’t doubt that you may have heard otherwise from some Orthodox … there are many Orthodox, especially cradle Orthodox, who are quite misinformed about Orthodoxy due to poor catechesis/Yia-Yia-Orthodoxy problems. Converts unfortunately often know the faith better because we have to (not being born into it), but that doesn’t mean converts should lord that knowledge over cradles … always a balance.

To be fair, no submarine movie is in the same league as The Hunt for Red October, and Red October isn’t in the same league as Das Boot. On a lighter note, I have a hard time seeing Linda Cardellini as anything other than Velma.

    @ Mountain Man, Oscar

Thanks for the review. Here I was wondering how they could make this movie today and the submarine captain not be a kick ass woman. Of course. Woman as commander-in-chief of everybody, and a Hillary clone in the bargain. Still surprised chicks aren’t woven into the plot 50/50.

You can practically smell diesel in the room while watching Das Boot.

Scott says: I’ve actually “married” Mychael four times.

How do you ever remember all your anniversaries?
How many divorces is she going to have to get if she becomes unhaaaaapy?
I hope the groomsmen bought the tuxedos instead of always renting them.
Q: So how do you know when it is time to marry her again?
A: When you’re no longer having sex like newlyweds.
Third time is a charm! Fourth time is just showing off!
That’s like charismatics and their salvation.
You are just enabling her schizophrenia, tell the other personalities you’re already married to them.
Is their something on your registry that you’re still hoping to get?
This isn’t some new fetish I’m not aware of, is it? Poly-nuptial?
The wedding photographer’s “four-pack” was clearly the best deal, Huh?
    Dowry: ca-ching, ca- ching, ca-ching, ca-ching!
Time to tell her you’re afraid of recommitment.
That wedding dress probably has a few patches by now.

If your point is that some clergy try to go around sin to appease people’s feels…please provide the clergyman who did this obvious abuse of how annulment works.

    Seriously?

You must be familiar with this rather famous case: http://content.time.com/time/nation/article/0,8599,1634956,00.html

Of course when his wife appealed the annulment to the Vatican, they reversed it, but the point is that the tribunal granted it in the first place, and that most other “normal” people are not appealing to the Vatican or getting the Vatican’s attention. Keep in mind Kennedy was planning to marry his mistress in the Catholic Church, and the tribunal paved the way to that.

Thinking about what I wrote at 10.52pm yesterday, I wanted to add so that Americans might understand the demography that one hundred years ago in England, apart from upwards of a dozen ‘red-brick’ universities (all much smaller than they are today) seen very much as second tier, the only Universities worth considering in England were (and remain) the ancient (and thus not Red-Brick) Oxford and Cambridge. To get there one needs to attend the best fee-paying schools. I have known a large number of men (and a few women) who attended Ox/Bridge (as it is jointly called) yet they have never struck me as obviously brighter than anyone else – frequently less so. Shirley Williams when a Minister was largely responsible for the partial destruction of The English Grammar Schools (John Locke, Tom Paine and William Shakespeare for example had been scholars at such) by producing the dreadful Comprehensive Schools which in turn had the effect of making admission to Oxford and Cambridge more or less the preserve of the fee-paying schools – the sort that both Brittain and Williams had attended – and all this of course under the guise of equality. With elite left-wingers I can never decide whether their hypocricy exceeds their cupidity. Even when I was of tertiary-education age the number of people attending any form of further education at a University was hardly more than one per cent of the population – education was free and thus an expense for the government and there was thus little point in providing further education for women as the education from a practical point of view would be wasted – far better to exclude women in favour of men – who would probably work to the grave and thus justify the expense of the fees. A small number of females at Oxford placed amongst a much larger percentage of adolescent males would of course have produced a certain effect as it would do anywhere else. For men: academic success is often a matter approaching life or death – or at least worldly success with all that might bring – for women not at all.

Do you know what is sad about this Indivisible movie? It is that it COULD have been truly awesome. We desperately NEED movies that show men, in successful leadership roles, in this country badly.

Interestingly enough, as Dalrock pointed out, male cops, male firefighters, and now male soldiers are showing as failures in Christian movies, as needing help and being total train wrecks. But the TRUTH for anyone who works with female cops/medics/firefighters/soldiers KNOW the women in these roles are incredibly incompetent, with the rare exception.

    Let’s look at the data:

The average American man over age 20 weighs 195.7 pounds. And the average height is just over 5 feet 9 inches (69.2 inches) tall.

By comparison, the average American woman weighs 168.5 pounds and is just under 5 feet 4 inches (63.7 inches) tall.

A thinner man who weighs 160 pounds can typically lift approximately 135 pounds on the bench press, 125 pounds squatting and 155 pounds dead-lifting.

A thinner woman who weighs 132 pounds can typically only lift approximately 64 pounds on the bench press, 59 pounds squatting and 74 pounds dead-lifting.

If any man or woman of average height and weight in America ever finds himself/herself passed out inside a burning house due to smoke and a female cop or firefighter comes in, the victim is as good as dead. She cannot get them out because she lacks the basic physical strength to do so.

Most extremely fit gym-rat females cannot lift more than 100lbs pounds of weight, so no way she can help even the most basic men if found unconscious in a fire or a battlefield (hey, I am not even consider the female’s gear, such as firefighting clothes, oxygen tank, axe, or combat gear). -_-

On the other hand, a gym-rat male could lift over 200lbs of weight, which may be a struggle if the victim weighs more than 200lbs and is wearing gear (i.e. wounded solider in battlefield).

But at 1/2 of that strength/weight-lifting ability, the average woman cannot rescue even a naked, skinny passed out victim! She cannot carry or drag him because she, unless is on serious male testosterone (steroids), is physically unsuited for that job to begin with.

So it is ironic and even insulting that the MEN are portrayed as the idiots in these movies when the women cannot even do their most BASIC functions of their job (effect arrest, get a victim of a fire out of danger, or even carry a wounded soldier). 🙄 You would think women would be chastised for not being able to do their basic jobs, and yet are glorified as firefighters. 🙄

Discriminating people on basis of their abilities would be mandatory in sane societies. No one should be hired to do a job because of their appearance. Only those qualified should be hired, not based on quotas or arbitrary laws. If a man or woman cannot lift the average man or woman and their job is to carry victims to safety as firefighter or medic, they should never be hired. Period.

But as men continue to check-out of a system designed to enslave or destroy them, expect to be left for dead if your rescuer happens to be a female solider/cop/firefighter/medic.
