It could be no other way.

Sam Adams has a commercial with beer drinkers training for a contest to see who can hold a stein full of beer at arm’s length the longest. Beer commercials have typically been about being one of the guys, but in our feminist era this has been modified somewhat.

Beer commercials are still about being one of the guys, but now they are about a woman becoming one of the guys too. What makes the commercial above noteworthy is that it isn’t noteworthy at all. This is perfectly normal to us. Of course women have more upper body strength than men.  And of course a woman can become one of the guys.

When people are forced to remain silent when they are being told the most obvious lies, or even worse when they are forced to repeat the lies themselves, they lose once and for all their sense of probity. To assent to obvious lies is…in some small way to become evil oneself. One’s standing to resist anything is thus eroded, and even destroyed. A society of emasculated liars is easy to control. That’s the situation my dad described in Yugoslavia in the 1950s. He used to tell us stories of people disappearing the day after saying the wrong thing out loud. He himself was imprisoned 3 seperate times at Goli Otok for wrongspeak. I was pretty young when I first remember hearing those stories, and the impetus for his escaping. It always had an “other worldly” quality to it back then. Like not something I needed not worry about.

The longer I live, the more I realize how heritable traits are. He would rather have been in prison than lie. The difference is, he was much younger than me then, not married and had no kids. But I HATE acting like everything is OK. I feel sick to my stomach when I participate in lies, on any level.

Sure, because the latter one gets to play by either set of rules, depending on what she wants. “I’m a big, strong, WOMAN, hear me roar!” when it’s to her benefit, but “Eeek! A mouse! “He himself was imprisoned 3 separate times at Goli Otok for wrong-speak.”

That phrase rings ominously in my ears, as we are at the threshold of that right now in Western societies.

Right now in the West, leftists will shame you, out you, and attempt to get you fired (with a great deal of success) for the high crime of wrong-speak or wrong-think.

It seems a natural progression that jail time will be coming shortly for these infractions.

In fact, in Canada, it is now a crime to not refer to someone in the pronoun of their choosing. ‘Zi and Zir’ being examples of made-up pronouns that are to be adhered.

Being as it’s a crime, ‘jail-time’ and ‘re-education’ are both on the table for punishments available to be dispensed.

The ‘Per Bak’ principle will (in time) reverse the copious ground gained by leftists and SJWs.

When the limit is reached, a momentous correction will wipe out this type of egregious nonsense.

    Feminism is fascism.
    Leftism is fascism.
Liberalism (as it is now) is fascism.

    Fascist societies don’t ‘correct’.
    Fascism societies ‘end’.

    Something stronger takes their place.

I am actually a promoter of liberty.
However that liberty must be coupled with responsibility.

Without personal agency, accountability, responsibility being a cornerstone of society, we are all truly screwed.

That was probably true the last time you were on this side of the pond. Beer used to be limited in alcoholic content, 3.2% was a number in some states, 5% other places, 7%, etc. There are practical limits to how much alcohol a beer can have, whether top fermented or bottom fermented.

    But.

The microbrew culture that started in the 1990’s has now expanded beyond anything seen in the last 100+ years. It’s now possible to get a decent beer of various types in many US locales. Even out in flyover country you can find craft brewers making very hoppy ales, mild ales, real beers, stouts, etc. and etc. It would not be a surprise if the large scale market is flattening out in demand, due to the ever growing number of regional small and even microbrewers.

This is a more pleasant topic than Iron Curtain era police stating.

Americans learned drinking to get drunk during Prohibition because the alcohol was often low-quality. The habit seems to have outlived the necessity. And Mexicans only want the cheap stuff anyway. USA does many things right but not food & booze.

The mega brewers (Bud, Coors, Miller, etc.) are feeling the competition from the micros, some of which are not so micro anymore. As a result the bigger micros are getting bought out by the majors. I know a guy who works at the Budweiser plant in Fort Collins, CO. Young women of marriageable age dressed up in cleavage-displaying drindls, demonstrating THEIR wares. They did so by not only wearing the dress but also by serving other men and families those huge glasses as well as food. And they can carry those huge glasses with a lot of skill.

The idea was to combine man’s labor with women’s sex to produce more product as well as the next generation.

I lived in Dortmund, ‘Europa’s bier haupstadt eins!’ This was before the Internet. Phone calls to the USA were crystal clear, but cost well over $3.50 a minute (called home only twice. Once, to let my parents know I arrived safely, and again on Christmas morning in 1986. Both calls were very brief). Lots of letters and postcards that year!

Samuel Adams was the ONLY American beer that was sold on the market shelves at that time in West Germany. It was the only beer that passed strict “german” purity tests. When I was a legal drinker, Sammy Adams was the only American beer I swallowed. New York State’s horrid, upstate swill ‘Genesee’ is still getting upstaters drunk for “that first time” as teenagers sadly….I digress.

Even living in West Germany, the women were terrible drinkers…and the drinking age when I was there was 16 (or if you could reach the bar)…….teenager German girls crying, falling out of their blouses, running make-up, and with their unshaven legs and pits (I don’t know about now…but back then I was actually a bit culturally “horrified” as an American that German girls didn’t shave their legs). They were no better than their American’s counterparts back across the Atlantic.

It’s too bad Samuel Adams is about “being one of the guys” because frankly….most guys are not even guys today. As for beer sales in the USA, Samuel Adams has some stiff competition. “Bud Lite” is the best selling beer in the USA by a LONGSHOT. This commercial will do little to better their sales…………..

The “Political Left” (whatever that means exactly: remember, Boxer tells us he’s a “Marxist”¹ … and I ain’t talking about him, here) have always been about the appropriation of things of value, in the name of Virtue, with the excuse of redistribution to the “disadvantaged”, for the actual sake of self-aggrandizement. So, I would argue, here it’s about the appropriation of the Respectability of the targeted social institution itself, in the name of “inclusivity” or some such virtue”-signaling cr@p (that is, people who aren’t respectable are “disadvantaged”, because, well, no respect), while the people doing this get to be — for instance, in a recently canvassed example here on Dalrock, lesbian “Bishops“, which is pretty Grand to be, I’m quite sure.

They didn’t have to prove their creativity or accomplish anything and next thing you know, they are in charge of writing commercials. These are women who have never been creative. So what do they do EVERY TIME? They go to the only narrative they’ve ever known; men are dopes and women are infallible. Again and again, it’s the same shtick, with every commercial.

    1. Denigrate hapless, disappointing males
    2. Applaud flawless, strong, driven, wondrous females
    3. Sell your product.

Could be soap, cars, beer, candy, socks, whatever. Same narrative over and over, by women who have been ‘equality-ied’ into positions they never merited. There is no creativity at all.

Grocery stores here have a huge amount of space dedicated to micros — it’s almost equal to that dedicated to majors — and even convenience stores normally have a decent stock of micros, both local and national. It’s really a cost issue, though. I live in one of the wealthiest areas in the country, and so micros are very popular here despite the comparatively lavish cost per beer.

I cannot stomach American beer…..that is brewed in the USA. If you buy a Budweiser in the UK or Canada it is 5% alc/vol….whereas the USA made is 3%

Actually, it is typically 5% in the US. That said, there are some states (like Colorado) that have strange “Blue Laws” on the books. The Colorado law stipulates that beer sold in Grocery Stores is limited to 3.2%. However, you can purchase 5%, or higher, at liquor stores. Also, in Colorado, you cannot purchase wine or distilled spirits at grocery stores, as a liquor license is only good at one location, and only one license is granted to the chain. This is why there is only one Trader Joe’s in all of Colorado where you can purchase wine or spirits. It also used to be that you couldn’t purchase alcohol on Sundays, but that law was repealed a few years ago. There has been talk of removing the grocery store restrictions, but it has met strong opposition from the liquor store lobby. It’s on;y a question of time.

Even the US made does not say this on the bottle

That is not true, at least not here in Colorado. And regular Coors has 5% alcohol, it just doesn’t have any flavor.

Yes……I have seen those beers in the liquor stores.I find that some of the European beers that I like are the same as we have in Canada.

“”That is not true, at least not here in Colorado. And regular Coors has 5% alcohol, it just doesn’t have any flavor.””

I have never seen the alcohol content on any American beer….at least the ones in the grocery stores. The only American beer that I will buy is Rolling Rock….we have it hear also and again when you taste both the US and Canuck versions there is a very noticeable difference. The Canuck version being better as it is stronger and tastier because it is cooked longer.Actaully, when I travel to the US(which is quite often) I bring my own beer.Otherwise,I end up drinking liquor and I prefer to stay away from that stuff.

  69. Novaseeker says:

That said, there are some states (like Colorado) that have strange “Blue Laws” on the books.

Lots of states have them, actually. You basically have to know what the laws are when you travel in the US, because they vary wildly. I’d say there are a good number of states which allow beer and wine to be sold in grocery and convenience stores, but there are a lot that don’t, including some populated states. MD only permits it in liquor stores, and I think Indiana is the same. PA only allows beer to be sold in distributors (which are not liquor stores — liquor stores sell wine and booze but not beer). NJ has a quilt of local municipal laws, so you need to know the town’s rules. Overall, it’s just a big mess, and you need to know what the rules are where you are, because there are a lot of surprising laws out there. And that doesn’t even get to the issue of hours (and in some cases days) of retail sale, which really are all over the place.

@Frank K, I find that Coors Banquet has a similar taste to German pilsners like Warsteiner, and Berliner.

@Mark, when I was in the military, I had just moved to the East coast from a state with a large micro/craft brewing scene. I asked one of the troops that worked for me if there were any micro-breweries around. He said, well, there’s Rolling Rock up in PA. We were speaking the same language, but not communicating. That said, I find RR to have a taste on par with Sewers Light, but that just goes to show how tastes differ.

@Novaseeker, don’t forget that in Pennsylvania, all the liquor is sold at state run stores, and even the amazing booze is sold at the suggested price. I have a friend who won the lottery for a bottle of some really awesome bourbon. He got it for $65 or something equally ridiculous where on the auction market it was selling for over $1000.

I drink very infrequently. In fact, on medical forms I usually put “never” because there is not usually a box for “if I am at a wedding or a friend has me over to watch a football game and the moon and planets are aligned exactly right, and the mood strikes me I might have a drink.”

I drank A LOT in high school, and for a few years after that, then I just stopped. No real reason, just got bored with it.

However, I am aware that alcohol is a thing that regular people enjoy from time to time.

Until I joined the army in 2001, I had never interacted with the concept of “blue laws.” I was living in Fayetteville NC, (stationed at Fort Bragg, which is in Cumberland county) and I was invited to a New Years Eve party. So, I went to the grocery store to buy a bottle of champagne for the hosts.

I walked around the store forever. I went down every aisle several times and I was stumped. Where was the “wine and spirits” section? So I finally asked someone “I am just trying to buy a bottle of champagne. Where is it?”

    “Lee county” was his reply.

    That was pretty weird.

    @Novaseeker,

My wife and I moved from Illinois to Indiana this year. In Indiana, you can buy wine, beer, and licqour in grocery stores (at least around Indianapolis where we moved), but their are some weird laws compared to what we were used to in Illinois:

    1. No package licqour sales on Sunday. Go to a restaurant, bar, or brewery, sure, you can buy a drink, but no package sales.
    2. Breweries can fill growlers of beer to go on Sunday, but only if they brew onsite. So I can buy a growler of beer at Sun King in Fishers since they brew onsite, but not the Upland tap house in Carmel since Upland brews in Bloomington, IN.
    3. You can sell beer or white wine at a liquor store or grocery store, but you can’t refrigerate it.🤔 I suppose it’s to cut down on drinking and driving, but if I want to buy a fifth of whiskey and start doing shots . . .

As to prices, I don’t know where you are in the US, but in Indiana and Michigan craft brews are price competitive with big domestic brewers by the glass. The key is to buy and enjoy at the brewery. If you order a craft beer at a bar or restaurant it’ll be more expensive than a Miller or Budweiser.

With all of Indiana’s weird laws they do beat Illinois hands down on cost. A $10 growler fill in a brewery in Indiana (and it’s good beer, not swill) would be $20 in Illinois. A $4.50 pint in Indiana is more like $6.50 in Illinois. It’s a stunner to get the bill after a couple of rounds of beer in Illinois compared to Indiana. 😳

Oh yeah the odd business is around cold beer, I remember now. I think I remember buying cold beer at a liquor store there once, though … maybe the laws have changed. Does anywhere in Indiana sell closed container cold beer to take home, or are you stuck with buying warm or onsite at breweries?

Yep that’s true. I wasn’t thinking about that, but you can also go to craft breweries in Virginia and buy open containers of beer at competitive prices. But if you go to the grocery store the prices for closed containers to bring home are not competitive with majors (of course the quality is very different too).

As others have pointed out, it depends on where you are. In Colorado, since grocery stores can only sell 3.2%, it is clearly labelled, both on the box and on the bottles and cans. Usually they only sell the domestic majors there (Bud, Coors, Miller) but I have also seen imports like Corona, even German beer, with the 3.2 label on them. Go to the liquor store and the majors and imports are are all 5%, and micros can be higher.

There is another beverage in the US that goes by the name “malt liquor”, which is basically beer with higher alcohol content, as high as 10%.

That said, if you want a good beer in the US, buy micros. Personally, I like New Belgium products.

I have found some lesser known (in the US) German beers like Koeningpilsner in the US at prices that are competitive with Bud, Coors or Miller. But I have had Americans tell me, after trying it, that they didn’t like it. The majors brew bland beer because it sells.

Ah, yes, “dry counties”, where you can’t purchase any alcohol.

The patchwork of American alcohol laws must be bewildering to foreigners (it’s bewildering for Americans).

I remember when I saw my first “State Liquor Store”, which was when I visited Utah. The notion that only the state can sell it is curious, even more so when said stores tend to exist mostly in very conservative states. When I moved from California to Colorado, the difference in laws caught me by surprise, as you can buy anything at the supermarket in California. I also wandered around the supermarket, looking for the non existent “wine aisle”. I was then told I had to go to a liquor store, but since it was Sunday they would all be closed. You also can’t buy a car on Sunday in Colorado. But you can buy recreational marijuana. Go figure.
